According to the EPA, over 100 million computers are retired each year in the U.S. resulting in 65,000 tons of waste. Many of these computers could be collected, refurbished and given to low income families and individuals. Average computer users buy a new system every three to five years and, if they don't give their old system away, they generally relegate it to a storage closet or they simply dump it out with the trash. According to the National Safety Council, three-quarters of all computers ever purchased in the U.S. remain stockpiled in storerooms, attics, garages, and basements. In 2001, only 11 percent of personal computers retired in the U.S. were recycled. Considering there are over 2 million households in Minnesota and 1.3 million households with computers, hundreds of thousands of Minnesota computers could be reused each year.

Tax Benefits

Other than renewing the life of a computer and helping to solve the problem of e-waste a donor may be able to write off their donation. The IRS code provides a tax deduction for property donated to a charitable organization under applicable rules and regulations. For individuals, the charitable deduction for contributions of technology equals the fair market value (retail used value in the current market place) of the donated property. The donation is tax deductible for the year in which the equipment is received. For corporate donors, tax deductions are usually limited to the amount of the donor's tax basis in the property contributed. A receipt letter will be provided to the donor upon completion of the donation process. That letter will reflect the year in which the equipment was received.

Data Privacy

Data privacy is a priority for us. Upon being received by PCs for People, each donated computer is wiped according to our data sanitization policy.

Corporate Donations

Donating end-of-lifecycle computers to PCs for People is extremely simple, cost efficient and helps those in need. Many companies pay per pound and pickup fees for recycling companies to handle their PC assets. PCs for People will send a truck and volunteers to business locations statewide to pickup larger computer donations FREE of charge.
