Data Sanitization

We take your data privacy very seriously. Below are the methods we use to ensure that all sensitive data is removed from your donated computer.

Transfer of Ownership

All corporate donations receive a transfer of ownership document. This document is completed by both the donor and PCs for People. The completed document transfers all liability with data, recycling and reuse of the computers to PCs for People.

Secure Storage (Starting Spring of 2011)

Computers are placed into secure storage that is only accessible to PCs for People staff.

Data on Hard Drives is Erased

All personal information is removed from the hard drives. PCs for People uses a three step process:

  1. A software called DBAN is used to erase all contents of the hard drive
  2. A new licensed copy of Windows XP is reinstalled
  3. A software called ERASER runs on the remaining free space of the hard drive

If the drive fails at any point in our data sanitization process, it is physically destroyed.

We are confident with our abilities to erase all data from hard drives, but if you still have questions about our policies or procedures please contact us at 651-354-2552 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
